← TN SINKING POND AEDC TN Triple Blaze →

Description

The Fiery Gizzard trail is said to be one of the best trails in Tennessee, and it is arguably in the top 25 in the country according to Backpacker Magazine. It's a point-to-point hiking trail that offers beautiful views and amazing waterfalls! Interesting legends exist about how this trail got its name--one being that Davy Crockett burned his tongue on a gizzard, another one is that an Indian chief threw a gizzard into a fire to get the attention of Europeans. The trail is part of the South Cumberland Recreation Area and goes through the Grundy Forest State Natural Area. The Fiery Gizzard is a very difficult and strenuous hike and is only meant for experienced hikers/backpackers.

Directions

It's a little tricky to park at the Tracy City trail head. Find Pigeon Springs Road (it's behind some industrial buildings) and you'll see the parking area behind that.
